What will the session be like?
During the session, I will situate your children and/or family in locations that are ideal for the natural light we’re working with at the time. I often asks my clients to tickle each other, tell a joke, or nuzzle noses. I will do some directing and move us along from place to place to make sure we get a good variety of images for your gallery. If you have any ideas for the session, feel free to share them with me before or during the session.
When should I schedule?
Because of the custom nature of my work, I book only a limited number of sessions each month. There are certain times of the year that are busier than others. Late spring and early fall are almost always booked with a waiting list, so it is never a bad idea to get a spot as quickly as possible. Depending on time of year, please be sure to schedule at least 3 to 6 weeks in advance to ensure an appointment.
For newborns: When photographing newborns I prefer to see them during the first two weeks of life, with a true sweet spot being day 5. They are less easily disturbed while sleeping, are more “pliable” and can be easily posed, and baby acne hasn’t yet surfaced.
For babies and young children: The best time of day to schedule a session for this age group is in the morning. They are happiest when they are well rested.
For expectant mothers: Maternity sessions are optimally done around the 30-34 week mark. During this time the belly out in full force, but you’re not to the uncomfortable stage that happens during the final weeks of pregnancy.
Where is your studio located (directions)?
Because my studio is in my home, I do not post directions on this website. Once your session is booked I will send you simple directions via email.
What can I do to make sure my children are happy for the session?
Children are smart and they are very aware of their parents’ emotions. If you stress out over the details of the session, they will feel how tense you are and will most likely do the same. My advice is to stay relaxed and have fun during the session and be an example in front of your children. Remember, you have hired a custom photographer, so time is not an issue. There is no need to worry if your child isn’t giddy for me right away. I am very good with children so if you give me some space and time, I will most likely be able to get those great expressions from your children that you love so much. The bottom line is to HAVE FUN. Let that be your mantra for the session and I will take care of the rest.
What if I need to Reschedule my session?
Please contact me as soon as possible if your child becomes ill. I will reschedule a session twice before the session fee is forfeited.
My child just got a cut on his forehead! Can I reschedule my session?
There’s no need to fret. This is one of the benefits of custom photography! I retouch every image and am able to remove most blemishes
Do you bring any props?
I have many props for newborns that I keep in my studio, so please don’t worry about props for these sessions. For babies, toddlers, and older children I encourage my clients to bring their own props to personalize the images. These props, or details as I call them, could be your child’s favorite doll, book, blankie, or tricycle. It’s really fun to add color and pattern to your images with a quilt.
Will I get every image in color and black and white?
No. I process each photograph in either color or black & white based on what I feel works best for that particular image. Some images work well in both color and black & white, in which case I will show both versions in your gallery. If there is an image that you would really like to have converted to black and white, please let me know.
Why do newborn sessions take so long?
Newborn sessions typically take longer because we take lots of breaks to nurse and soothe the baby. Also, posing newborns is an art form unto itself and it can take some time to get the baby in the perfect position.
When will I see my proofs?
Your portraits will be ready for viewing/ordering approximately 2 weeks after the session. I offer proofing via an online gallery for your convenience. A special link and password will be emailed to you for viewing your images, and you may forward the link to your friends and family so that they can see your images, too.
Can I purchase the digital negatives?
Yes! I have many clients who wish to preserve and self-archive their sessions. For more information about digital negative packages, please contact me for a complete price list.
I am nervous about handling the digital files on my own. How can I make sure I get professional quality photographs?
Detailed printing instructions as well as lab recommendations will be included with the purchase of your digital negatives. The lab I recommend has great quality, unbelievable prices, and a lot of fun products, too. If you would rather have me handle the printing of your images I would be happy to do so. Clients who choose to purchase on of our popular collections will receive a 50% discount on prints and a 20% discount on boutique products.
Will you have my digital files backed up just in case I lose my set?
Purchased images will be archived for one year, and unordered images are purged 6 weeks after the session. I highly recommend that you make a duplicate copy of your disc and store it somewhere safe (i.e. a safety deposit box). There is a service charge of $100 if you need a replacement disc of your images.
Do you take credit cards?
Yes, all major credit cards are accepted. Sales tax in the amount of 8.25% applies to session fees as well as print orders for California residents.
